Crossing Paths

Fall 2021_ Professor Julie Kress

As a literal “chunk” of Knoxville, this project analyzes a small piece of the city in ways that challenge its current program. What began as an interest in an alleyway coffee shop in Knoxville’s old city, developed into a deep interest in the details. The primary questions of the chunk consisted of: What constitutes an alleyway? How does it insinuate movement? Can this be challenged?

The final imaginative design serves as an “open-air museum” of all things alleyway. How can the concept be applied to areas that are perhaps not considered to be an alley? Through the use of exposed structure and attached coverings, this project investigates how the interaction of the two can insinuate movement and redefine the spatial conditions of the traditional alley.
