River Bend
Spring 2023_ Professor Katherine Ambroziak
The River Bend project strives to develop a spiritual space alongside the Cumberland River edge on the outskirts of the University of Tennessee’s campus. The University of Tennessee has molded itself around the river but unfortunately brings little attention to its relationship with campus. The University has a diverse student body representing many ideologies, yet lacks a communal spiritual space that celebrates this.
The final structure is a series of clustered programmed spaces and courtyards situated on the edge of the river, offering a promenade for both students and community members to enjoy. The outdoor circulation invites the enjoyment of the environment, rather than forcing a journey within a conditioned space. The three lightweight steel pavilions feature a connected scupper system to utilize natural resources as sensory elements. Orientation and gabion walls accentuate natural aspects of the site, emphasizing noises of nature.
