Missing Middle
Fall 2023_ Professor Tricia Stuth
This collaborative project with the city of Knoxville addresses the Knoxville housing shortage by introducing the concept of “Missing Middle” housing. The current housing market in Knoxville is limited to primarily single-family homes, leaving individuals seeking smaller, affordable options with few choices. To overcome this problem, the proposed solution involves incorporating diverse housing types like duplexes and townhomes into zoned areas that currently limit the construction of these types.
The design focuses on transition areas between commercial and residential zones, emphasizing adaptability over time. The structure aims to accommodate various needs, offering flexibility through adjustable interior configurations, such as adding or subtracting infill walls to create commercial spaces or additional housing units.
