Factory House

Spring 2024_Professor Jeremy Magner

Remnants of the historic McClung Warehouse stand undisturbed along West Jackson Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee, a poignant reminder of the site's storied past. Following fires in 2007 and 2014, the remaining sections of the structure were demolished. The current project aims to breathe new life into the site, creating a dynamic, multipurpose structure that integrates innovative systems through both joinery and functional design.

The design process began with an in-depth investigation of the site’s elements. By mapping wind patterns based on height, the resulting composition inspired key features of the final design. These wind patterns influenced the creation of a tiered, angular roof that complements the overall structure. Similarly, this mapping exercise was completed by all project contributors, which led to the composition of the foundation elements and structure. While the core of the design was a group effort, each individual developed their own façade concepts, drawing from personal model explorations.

The final design centers around a spacious interior atrium that overlooks a sublevel industrial production center. Above, residential units are positioned at angles optimized to capture natural sunlight. The atrium itself functions as a large trombe wall, working in tandem with operable louvers that regulate heat transfer, ensuring the space remains thermally efficient and responsive to changing conditions.
